As a fan of professional wrestling in general and of puroresuring in
particular, I have watched and enjoyed the spectacular performances put on
by the stars of Gunryo Pro. President Clint Fletcher has done an
excellent job with his organization under trying circumstances and has put
together what I honestly feel to be amongst the best wrestling available in
the world today, bar none. I have even enjoyed his direct
participation in the federation itself through the "Great Fletcha"
character.
So it was that when I sat down to watch the "Cold Blood" supercard
from the Sapporo Snow Festival, I looked forward to seeing incredible
wrestling action along with compelling struggles between the various stars
currently on the G-Pro roster. And I did enjoy almost every aspect of
the card, revelling in the virtuosity shown by the wrestlers and caught up
in the excitement of the action.
With one notable exception.
I have worked in the professional wrestling industry for some time now and
while I am no expert, I like to think that I am somewhat familiar with the
backstage machinations which most fans do not see.
Thus, I was shocked to see the absolute abomination which was the destruction
of the wrestler known as Wuzho by Kashan Akuma.
I know why this horrific act was carried out. I even understand the
necessity of part of it.
But the sheer brutality of the incident combined with the completely
unnecessary annihilation of a professional wrestler's career forces me to
take the unprecedented step of voicing my opinion through this
editorial.
I do not blame Kashan Akuma for his acts, he was simply destroying an
opponent in a manner which he correctly felt he would be allowed to do.
I blame Clint Fletcher.
Don't get me wrong, I respect the man for what he's done, both with Gunryo
Pro as well as other wrestling endeavors. But what he did to Wuzho's
career at "Cold Blood" was not only reprehensible, it also casts a
pall over every other professional wrestler ever associated with him.
For in not only allowing Akuma to go as far as he did but to encourage him
to do so and to facilitate the act through the deliberate withholding of
security measures, Clint Fletcher stepped over a line which no promoter
should ever cross.
In my opinion, Clint Fletcher allowed his anger at the departure of one of
his wrestlers to cloud his judgement to the point where he deliberately
sought to ensure said wrestler would never compete in a
wrestling ring ever again.
Puroresuring fans may not know that prior to the "Cold Blood" card,
Wuzho had submitted his notice that he would be withdrawing from the G-Pro
roster and terminating his contract. From a "booking"
standpoint, the timing for this was awkward since Wuzho was scheduled to face
Akuma at the supercard.
But rather than allowing a respected competitor to simply leave following an
expected loss, Clint Fletcher went out of his way to try and destroy a man he
felt had wronged him.
And in doing so, Mr. Fletcher sent a VERY clear message to
every other wrestler signed to a G-Pro contract: Make the boss mad and
you will suffer consequences far out of proportion to any slight you may
intend.
Wuzho may have deserved to lose his match to Akuma, for Akuma is a top-notch
wrestler and more than capable of winning matches on his own. Wuzho
DID NOT DESERVE to be physically injured to the point where his
very life was threatened. He DID NOT DESERVE to have his
career ended in such a shameful manner.
Gunryo Pro does not benefit from this incident for its name will forever be
tarnished by the image of Wuzho being physically annihilated. Kashan
Akuma does not benefit from this incident for rather than gaining a
reputation as a villain amongst the fans, he is now known in the locker rooms
as someone willing to act as the federation's assassin. And Clint
Fletcher certainly cannot benefit from this act for now none of his wrestlers
can ever fully trust him not to perpetrate the same kind of heinous assault
on them.
When a wrestler signs a contract with an organization, he places a certain
amount of trust in the organization's head that they will take care of them,
nurture their careers and at a minimum, ensure that their work environment is
not hazardous to their livelihood.
Clint Fletcher violated that trust and I, for one, will never forgive him for
that.
To benefit the family of Wuzho, I have used my own private resources to set
up a fund to help allay some of the costs of his hospitalization and physical
rehabilitation. Contributions to this fund may be sent to P.O. Box
1000, Tokyo, Japan, 1-A-01
Good luck, Wuzho, in whatever the future may hold for you.
And to Clint Fletcher, I can only say this: You should be ashamed,
sir. You will doubtless laugh my comments off as inconsequential but
realize that I am not the only one who now looks upon you with distrust and
disdain.
Don Shamus.
