Jensei Tenru & Super Tengu: Cut
from the same cloth?
by Taro Nakada, October 6th, 1998
Super Tengu is a man who defies the traditions of puroresu, yet claims to be
"Puroresu No Kami-sama". He refuses to accept that there
could be anyone as good as, or even better, than him. Tengu's attitude
is well known, as his wars with men like Shinji Hamada, Ace Kilcannon Masashi
"Lightning" Lanther, Takao Nakami and Shoji Suzuki [then Jet
Jaguar]. Even more surprising is his cult-like popularity with the
fans. At one point, Tengu was the most popular competitor in
SJPW! He was even supported by members of Chiimu Tora during his feud
with Ace Kilcannon, only to betray them later. Tengu walks an erratic
path, yet even though most fans turned on him when it was revealed that he
had framed Shinji Hamada with the aid of Shinsaku Yamashita, some fans
*still* worship Tengu as the "Puroresu No Kami-sama"!
Jensei Tenru is a man also defies tradition. He claims to be
"It". He claims that he, not Tengu, is truly "Puroresu
No Kami-sama". Trained by the legendary Hakiro Matsuoko, Tenru is
a man who has the ability to rival Tengu not only in ego, but in wrestling
skill. Although he has yet to truly establish himself, to define his
history, yet already some fans, those who worshiped Tengu for his attitude,
yet felt betrayed by his lack of honor, have spread the word: Jensei Tenru is
the TRUE "Puroresu No Kami-sama"! A cult-like following is
starting to develop, one that parallels the one surrounding Super Tengu.
SJPW has yet to officially start programming, and all ready these two are
butting heads, and the fire is raging! Insiders feel these two men will
be one of the defining conflicts that will insure that SJPW re-establishes
itself as one of the premier puroresu promotions in all of Japan. If
Tengu and Tenru do feud, all of SJPW will be watching. Tengu is the
veteran, Tenru the rookie, yet both are so much alike, only their egos
prevent them from seeing what an alliance could do for both of them.
Instead, they struggle for dominance. Not together, but against each
other. When the dust settles, who shall claim the title of
"Puroresu No Kami-sama"? Only time will tell.....
